Owen Klassen versus Guelph

WOLFVILLE, NS - The Basketball Axemen remain undefeated in exhibition play so far this season with a convincing 91-76 win over the visiting Guelph Gryphons. Guelph, who finished fifth in the OUA west division last season, lost their third game on a Maritime swing trip that started in Halifax against Dalhousie and Saint Mary's.

Senior Axeman Owen Klassen netted a game high 37 points and added 14 points in Acadia's seventh win in a row. Klassen came alive in the second half after only 9 points in the first. Anthony Ashe and Jonathan Tull added 12 more points to the team's total.

Pulling out to a 26-8 first quarter lead, Axemen fell behind in the second quarter allowing Guelph to close the gap to 39-31 at the half. But Acadia led the entire game with the closest margin of one point in the opening minutes of the third quarter.

The Gryphons' Trevor Thompson scored a team high 18 points, while Jack Beatty and Michel Clark added 17 and 14 points respectively. Guelph was 61% from the distant arc while Acadia was a dismal 18% in the second half, 25% overall.

Tonight's game had three key team members missing including team MVP Anthony Sears, Brad States and basketball-football athlete Sean Stoquo whose Axemen football team captured the season title with a 7-1 season.

The Basketball Axemen close out the exhibition season with games against King's College on Thursday and a trip to Maine to take on the University of Maine on Saturday afternoon. The regular season begins on Friday November 9th as the Axemen head to UNB for a two game road trip.
