Basketball's Baur spends week with Portland Trail Blazers
WOLFVILLE, N.S. - A dream for some is reality for Axemen basketball head coach Stephen Baur this week. Baur, who has been the bench boss for the Acadia men's basketball team for five seasons is filling his early off-season with plenty of professional development.
With the season ending only four weeks ago in the CIS Bronze medal game against the University of Ottawa, Baur is spending his spring in Portland, Oregon with the Trail Blazers.
Seeking professional development is always a part of the regime of those who strive for his or her program being the best in the country and Baur is no stranger to this goal.
His connection with the Trail Blazers is assistant coach Jay Triano. Triano, a Canadian from Tillsonburg, Ont. is the current Canadian men's national team coach. Former head coach of the Toronto Raptors, Triano is an assistant with Portland.
Baur requested the possibility of observing the Portland operation and learning a few tricks from the pros. While the Trail Blazers fell short in making the post season, thye hold the cards for several team's final season standings.
Baur requested the opportunity to observe the team's coaching operations. "It is an exciting opportunity, and I am enjoying it. They even gave me a full access pass for the games and the coaching staff and assistants", points out Baur. "I am getting a chance to see the preparation, planning and practices heading into several important games. The Coaches are giving me access to what they do and answering questions".
The opportunity arose when Baur contacted Triano on the possibility of watching over the coaching staff and the operations of the team in their final weeks.
